In short
  • Mint an API key (bk_…) in Authr.
  • Add the MCP server with one command.
  • Lock the key to a role in Propose mode, so edits arrive as suggestions.
  • Start each session with get_book_context.

Using Claude or ChatGPT in the browser? You don't need any of this. Read Write a book with ChatGPT or Claude instead.

1. Mint a key

In Authr, open Settings → API keys and mint a key. It starts with bk_ and is shown once. Lock it to a role in Propose mode, such as the Writer or a custom role with the Manual runner, so changes to existing text come back as suggestions.

2. Add the server

Claude Code

claude mcp add --transport http authr https://app.authr.shop/mcp --header "Authorization: Bearer bk_…"

Codex

export AUTHR_KEY=bk_…
codex mcp add authr --url https://app.authr.shop/mcp --bearer-token-env-var AUTHR_KEY

Cursor

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "authr": {
      "url": "https://app.authr.shop/mcp",
      "headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer bk_…" }
    }
  }
}

3. First session

Use the authr tools. Find my book with list_books, then call get_book_context.
Summarise the outline and list the empty scenes. Don't change anything yet.

Then ask for real work: draft the empty scenes in a chapter from their synopses, or line edit a scene with edit_node. With a Propose key, edits to existing text come back as proposed changes.

4. Review in the app

Suggestions appear under the paragraph they change, and in the Review queue. Shift-click reject to leave a note; it lands in the role's inbox, which the agent can read with list_inbox.

External agents don't use your in-app allowance; they're unlimited on every plan. The full tool list is at app.authr.shop/llms.txt. Webhooks and the REST API are covered in API and webhooks.

Questions

Can the agent accept its own suggestions?

No. Accepting and rejecting are author-only, and those tools are hidden from agent keys.

Does it use my in-app agent allowance?

No. External agents over MCP or the API are unlimited on every plan. Only agents that run inside Authr use the monthly allowance.

Can I act as different roles with one key?

Yes. An unlocked key can send an x-authr-role header per request. Locking the key to one role is safer.

Connect your agent.
